We all need a calendar be it the Gregorian or any local that we follow. Life without calendar would be incomplete as we would not know what is when and when is what? Confused, well surely anyone would be without it. The calendar is what helps us track everything in this world. A calendar is used for both religious and administrative purposes. A calendar is made with time periods such as weeks and months. They have time periods such as day, weeks, months and years.

A day means a specific period in the system being a twenty-four-hour cycle. The calendar is very useful as it is a physical record which can help to record and monitor different periods in the system. It helps us plan events, know the time in the period and organise ourselves based on it.

History of Calendar

Months and years are based on the cycle of the sun or the moon. Most parts of the world have adopted the Gregorian Calendar which is a lunisolar calendar. A lunisolar one is a lunar calendar which adds one month to match with the solar year over a long period. The Gregorian years are modified from the Julian yearbook. Pope Gregory XII initiated the Gregorian Calendar in the 16th century.

Each month has either thirty or thirty-one days with the exception of February which has twenty-eight days and every four years the month of February having twenty-nine days known as Leap Year.

What is Leap Year?

A year with an additional day to match with the astronomical year is called Leap Year. As the astronomical events are not calculated in whole number days, therefore, a day is added to correct the difference. A year without an extra day is a common year. The Gregorian calendar has 365 days normally, but in a Leap year, it has 366 days. It is by adding a day to the month of February and making it twenty-nine day month.

The Gregorian calendar has fixed days which proceeds one day ahead to the next year. For example, if Christmas fell on Wednesday in 2013, on Thursday in 2014, on Friday in 2015 but Sunday in 2016. This jump is known as a leap year. In a common year, the jump is on the next day, but in a leap year, the drift is double. Due to insertion of leap seconds, the length of the day differs depending on the Earth’s rotational period. Leap seconds are not added to schedule because it is difficult to predict.

Beginning of the year

It was the consular year when the Roman Empire used which commenced when they started the office in 222BC, but the date is not known exactly. The Julian Calendar used January 1 which began in 45BC. Since the Roman Republican period, the calendar showed January to December in the same sequence.In the Middle Ages, many started the year with festivals such as the Christmas or Easter.

Many regarded January 1 as the New Year’s Day and were celebrated same till the 12th century to 1751. January 1 was accepted as the start of the year by many European countries before adopting Gregorian Calendar. The English and Scottish both changed January 1 at the starting of the year from 1752 and 1600 respectively. Even other British colonies followed the Gregorian Calendar once it was introduced in England. In many countries, January 1 was fixed as the start of the year, but in some countries, it was movable going back and forth as customs varied.

Difference between Gregorian and Julian Calendar

There is a difference of three days every four centuries between the Gregorian and Julian Calendars. In the late middle ages, February 24 was doubled to obtain intercalary day. The Gregorian calendar came into existence from before 1582. The Gregorian calendar is in front of the Julian Calendar. If the difference is negative in the equation, then the Julian Calendar is ahead of the Gregorian calendar.
